Ashes of Creation Apocalypse (also referred to as APOC)[4] was a free-to-play[5] matchmaking-based arena game with three primary modes.[6]
Ashes of Creation Apocalypse utilizes action-based combat.[6][7][9]
- Ashes of Creation Apocalypse will be implemented side-by-side with the Ashes of Creation MMORPG.[10][11]

Ashes of Creation Apocalypse testing
Ashes of Creation Apocalypse battle royale initial testing proceeded as follows.[18][30]
- Alpha-1 testers only.[31]
- Alpha-2 testers were invited starting 2018-10-19 at 6:30PM (PDT).[18]
- Alpha-0, Beta-1 and Beta-2 testers were invited in the following weeks.[18]
- Finally, testing was opened to all registered users.[18]
Glorious Ashes Community, we are expanding our testing group this weekend to include all Alpha 2 backers. We will also be lifting the NDA for the Phase 1 Arena testing going forward. Testing tonight will be starting at around 6:30pm and will be running till Sunday evening. With intermittent maintenances during the tests. We are happy to announce the testing is going very well and we are collecting a lot of useful data. In the weeks moving forward we will begin to announce invites to all beta backers and all A0 testers, before eventually inviting all registered users.[18] – Steven Sharif
Ashes of Creation Apocalypse castle sieges and Ashes of Creation Apocalypse horde mode testing schedules will be similar.[30]

Ashes of Creation Apocalypse limited testing sessions
Ashes of Creation Apocalypse battle royale testing resumed on Tuesday, August 20, 2019 from 11AM PDT to 11PM PDT.[33]
- Testing was open to all registered users.[33]
- The latest patch was available from the Ashes of Creation website from Monday, August 19 at 2PM PDT.[33]
- Ashes of Creation Apocalypse was available for download on Steam from Monday, August 19, 2019 at 2PM PDT.[33]
- Solo and squad game modes of battle royale were available on North American (East), European (Central), and Asian (Singapore) servers.[33]
- Players in this test were able to queue with eachother, even if they are in different regions.[33]
- Players were able to access to everything they have earned previously from their Adventurer’s path, however overall progress was be reset for this test.[33]
- This test had a placeholder "Test Compendium", with Adventurer’s paths and Legendary paths that only contain XP-related rewards.[33]

Ashes of Creation Apocalypse battle royale (also referred to BR mode)[4] was a Battle royale testing mode consisting of up to 100 players.[6][8]
- This is a last man standing JcJ combat mode.[45]
- Armes and armor found in the world have unique skills associated with them. These interact with the terrain from defensive, offensive and utility standpoints.[45]
- Players can build buildings and structures such as watchtowers, defensive pillboxes and arcane structures.[45]
- Everything in the world apart from rocks and trees is destructible.[46]
It's going to have a lot of high octane energy and activity. It's going to be very streamable. It's going to be no NDA. There's going to be a lot of different weapons and skills that were going to be testing. Each of the weapons and armor that you can find in the world are going to have unique spells and skills associated with them that interact with the terrain from a defensive standpoint, from a utility standpoint, from an offensive standpoint. It's going to be able for you to build buildings, complete structures, watchtowers and defensive pillboxes type structures: Arcane structures. Ashes of Creation Apocalypse castle siege mode
Ashes of Creation Apocalypse castle sieges are a planned Ashes of Creation Apocalypse testing mode that aims to test castle siege mechanics.[8]
- Takes place in and around large destructible castles.[16]
- Matches are expected to last thirty to thirty-five minutes. This duration can be modified by control points captured during the match.[51]
- There will be 200 players in a match (100 v 100).[6][8]
- Invite up to 20 guildmates to a match.[16]
- Class kits come into play during the testing of Ashes of Creation Apocalypse castle sieges.[52]
- The ability to host a session and challenge an opponent or guild may be present post-launch of castle siege mode.[53]
The Castle Siege mode is another example of a playable slice of the MMORPG that Apocalypse is providing early testing for. While it’s a somewhat smaller scale experience than the one you’ll have in the MMO, the overall flow of taking and defending a castle will remain similar. There’s some additional systems you’ll see in the final product, like the influence of Nodes over the available defensive emplacements, the crafting and deploying of custom siege weapons, and the summoning of siege monsters. These are all things that we’ll be adding on top of this mode upon our release of Ashes of Creation.[51] – Margaret Krohn
A potential Alpha-1 implementation of Siège de Château in the MMORPG is based on Ashes of Creation Apocalypse castle sieges.[54]
Siege equipment
Ashes of Creation Apocalypse siege equipment includes ballistas, trebuchets, battering rams and potentially traps and "powder keg" type weapons.[57]
- Siege weapons available to the attacking side include Trebuchets and Battering Rams.[51]
- Siege weapons available to the defending side include Ballistas and Traps.[51]
- Siege weapons are deployable and piloted by players.[16]
With regards to alpha one phase one however in the castle siege system... what will happen is static siege equipment that's placed in the map for the attackers to utilize that will present at focal points of PvP in the match where defenders will know where to target a specific area on the field in order to attack. Ashes of Creation Apocalypse horde mode
Ashes of Creation Apocalypse horde mode is an Ashes of Creation Apocalypse testing mode where 50 players defend a city against waves of incoming PNJs and player controlled monsters.[6][7][16]
- Each wave is more difficult than the last.[16]
- Between waves, players collect experience, money and weapons to take back to their hold to defend against the next wave.[8]

- Guild mode will have parties of raids of up to 20.[60]
- Ashes of Creation Apocalypse castle sieges will have parties of 5 within a raid, with 5 raids for each of the two teams.[60]
- Ashes of Creation Apocalypse horde mode will have a party size of 5 with a total of ten groups, making for 50 players.[60]

Ashes of Creation Apocalypse is based on action combat.[7][9][6]
Ashes of Creation Apocalypse combat targeting
Action combat in Ashes of Creation Apocalypse utilizes a targeting reticle.[63]
- A hot key can be used to toggle reticle mode on and off.[63]
- Left mouse click is used for basic weapon attacks.[64]
- Right mouse click is used as a "focus" button. It can also be used to activate root motion attacks for melee.[64]
- Combat targeting uses hitbox registration in three separate regions: Upper body, lower body and head.[65]
- Certain weapons and skills have ADS (Aim Down Sights) functionality.[66][67]
There will be aim down sights. You may have seen it that you can aim down sights on weapons; and there will be scopes on like crossbows and stuff that - arcane scopes - that you can use.[66] – Steven Sharif
Some spells do have ADS. There's a long-range meteor blast that can be used from one of the spell books; and that has an arcane zoom in. It lets you zoom into a target.[67] – Steven Sharif
Alpha-1 will test hybrid action/tab combat.[7][68]
Time-to-kill

C'est quelque chose dont nous réfléchissons de manière récurrente et que nous testons activement dans notre système hybride et vous nous connaissez quand il s'agit de quelque chose que nous prenons en considération. Bien sûr nous voulons une partie action qui puisse interagir avec le système de stat par cascade; et vous savez que ça sonne comme un oxymore d'un point de vue action et ciblé, mais ce n'est pas nécessairement le cas. Il peut y avoir une partie action- par exemple si vous utilisez votre posture de bouclier et que vous interceptez correctement un projectile ou une compétence provenant d'un arc frontal, vous allez mitiger 80% des dégâts ou appliquer 80% de la défense physique du bouclier; et s'il provient d'une zone en dehors de cet arc frontal vous allez avoir un bonus moins élevé; et c'est essentiellement ce qui se passerait si l'on prenait en compte par exemple la valeur de la défense physique de votre bouclier, vous l'appliquez comme un facteur de mitigation des dégâts reçus, mais en plus vous ajoutez les stats en cascade à ce système responsable de la mitigation des dégâts du bouclier ou du taux de blocage; et peut-être vous savez que la compétence principal indique 80% de mitigation des dégâts provenant d'un arc frontal qui peut atteindre 87% grâce à vos stats essentiellement; et si cela n'est pas dans cet arc frontal, alors il s'abaissera à une valeur de 50% d'efficacité- voire 40% ou quelque chose comme ça. Ashes of Creation Apocalypse healing
Healing in Ashes of Creation Apocalypse will be reticle based (action targeted).[83]
- Healing skills are proximity based: Centered on self or centered on projectile impact.[84][85]
- There will be healing potion bursts (healing grenades) that will grant life to allies.[85]
- Healing is part of Class kits that come into play during the testing of Ashes of Creation Apocalypse castle sieges.[84][52]
We have a few design theories on action combat and healing to began with phase one. Part of that will be the implementation of a class system into the castle siege and horde mode of phase one. Those will be kits that play out as skills available from an action perspective. You'll be able to target in proximity, basically so positioning is going to matter. Importantly, for healers being close to the individual party members you wish to heal. Additionally, you'll have reticle based healing methods. This would be a template that could be launched in that direction as a pulse of heels or augments. So there's a lot of different systems are playing with that you'll see more of when we get to those when we get to the castle siege system and the Ashes of Creation Apocalypse horde mode.[83] – Steven Sharif

Ashes of Creation Apocalypse progression
The first chapter of Apocalypse is The Exodus. It takes part in the initial stages of the fall and sets the scene for upcoming chapters.[87]
- Between 15 and 20 cosmetic rewards are earnable in every chapter.[88]
- Daily and weekly quests will allow players to gain up to 50 levels (matching the intended level cap for the Ashes of Creation MMORPG).[89]
- Advancing through these levels allows players to unlock unique cosmetic rewards, such as weapon skins.[86][89]
You're going to have an adventuring path and that adventuring path is going to come with weekly quests and daily quests that you can participate in that will be available for the Castle sieges for the Horde and for the Battle Royale; and as you complete these quests you're going to gain experience; and right now you have up to 50 levels, which matches the intended cap for Ashes of Creation. Fifty levels of the adventure path that you can advance in; and as you advance in each of these levels you're going to be unlocking certain assets, such as these weapon skins. Now the great thing about player's progress in Apocalypse is that you will share the same account from Apocalypse to Ashes of Creation the MMORPG and anything that you earn in Apocalypse will be in Ashes of Creation the MMORPG- a unique as a skin exactly: A skin that you will have access to for helping us test write Apocalypse and preparing these different Alpha and Beta stages for Ashes of Creation.[89] – Steven Sharif
Ashes of Creation Apocalypse lore
Ashes of Creation Apocalypse lore takes place during the exodus from Verra.[90][91][92]
- Some unlucky citizens didn't quite make it through the gateways in time and fell back to the planet to fight for survival.[90] This underpins the battle royale mode.[91]
- Certain citizens are fighting for control over Castles that they believe to be last bastions of defense against the forces of corruption. This underpins the castle siege mode.[91]
- The last stand against the forces of corruption takes place in the horde mode.[91]
Initially you're playing the Battle Royale you're a part of the last group of survivors to try to leave Verra. And as you're leaving you get cut off. The slipstream ends and you start falling back to the planet. Now the activities that occur and the fighting amongst yourselves is a result of the influence of corruption: Corrupting your soul basically; and as we move into the Castle Siege mode that's where you see the survivors now trying to seek refuge in some of the last defendable bastions of of society. So you're fighting over those for your families and your friends to get into that keep to try to ride out the storm so to say; and that's what the Castle Siege is predicated on. Then moving into the Hordes is this is now the final showdown. How long can you last? And that's the narrative behind Apocalypse as a whole.[87] – Steven Sharif
Ashes of Creation Apocalypse lore is split into chapters.[87]
- Chapter 1 is called The Exodus. It takes part in the initial stages of the fall and sets the scene for upcoming chapters.[87]
What happened before you came back? What did your ancestors have to go through? What did these civilizations have to endure? ... You get to experience the world of Ashes of Creation. You get to take a peek under the hood of the art assets and the style that that art will be when you play the game; and at the same time while you're doing all of that and we're hitting the servers with as many people as possible, we are continuing production and implementing new art; and we are updating those those chapters of this story; and that's what each season so speak is called for us is a chapter. In fact the first chapter of Apocalypse will be titled the Exodus. So chapter one is the Exodus and players will have an opportunity to earn unique rewards in each chapter. So that chapter's period of time is roughly ten weeks- between eight and twelve. We'll see how those go, but right now it's set for ten weeks; and every ten weeks you're going to see an introduction of new content.[87] – Steven Sharif
Ashes of Creation Apocalypse quests
Questing in Ashes of Creation Apocalypse contains lore that gives insight to the happenings on Verra during the fall.[87]
- Daily and weekly quests allow players to gain up to 50 levels. Leveling allows players to unlock unique cosmetic rewards, such as weapon skins.[86][89]
- Days and weeks end at midnight UTC, with weeks ending on Sunday, 23:59.[94][95]
- These quests give lore that relates to the story of Verra during the fall, thousands of years before the start of the MMORPG.[86]
Ashes of Creation Apocalypse adventure paths
There are adventure paths (also known as Compendiums) in Ashes of Creation Apocalypse (Battle royale, Castle sieges, Horde mode).[86][89]
- The first chapter of Apocalypse is The Exodus. Between 15 and 20 cosmetic rewards are earnable in every chapter.[88]
- There will be an optional Legendary Path that players can purchase for USD $10 per 10 weeks.[86][88]
- The Legendary Path offers over 50 cosmetic rewards.[97][88]
- Alpha-1 backers and Intrepid pre-order pack owners will be granted a lifetime compendium (battle pass) to the Legendary path.[86][88][97][98]
- Alpha-2, Beta-1 and Beta-2 backers will have access to the first chapter's Legendary path, with over 50 cosmetics available to earn.[86][88]
- Other Kickstarter, summer backers and pre-order pack owners will receive the first chapter of the legendary path for free for 70 days. 71 different cosmetic rewards can be earned starting from December 18th.[97]
- The Legendary path will also have a shop for one-off cosmetics.[97]
- Embers can be used in Ashes of Creation Apocalypse to purchase unique cosmetics or to purchase the Legendary adventure path.[99]
- All Adventure paths in Ashes of Creation Apocalypse allow players to earn embers just for playing. Those embers will carry over into the MMORPG.[99]

Progression and experience tracking for participation in Ashes of Creation Apocalypse testing entitled players to earn unique cosmetic rewards. These earned rewards will carry over in player's accounts to live launch of the MMORPG.[5][101]

One of the ways we want to give back to the Community in participating in this testing is allowing for progress, quests, achievements rewards to be gained in Apocalypse... You will have rewards and quests and achievements that you and your participation and your performance in that game, whether it be the Castle Siege, the Horde Mode or the Battle Royale will earn you cosmetics. There will be costumes. There will be mounts to earn. There will be housing and furniture. There will be emotes. There will be weapon variants. A lot of these are what we have in production for our project Ashes of Creation, we apply some variants and skins for and make them only available through participating in helping us test these different game modes. And they will carry over to your account on the MMORPG.[5] – Steven Sharif
The account used for Apocalypse is the same account used for the MMORPG. Unique skins earned in Apocalypse will be added to the MMORPG as rewards for helping to prepare for the Alpha and Beta stages of Ashes of Creation.[89]
- Cosmetic skins are only be able to be applied to things that have already been earned, crafted or found within the Ashes of Creation MMORPG.[103]
- Skins earned in Apocalypse will be available to apply at certain tiers, levels and/or access points within the MMORPG.[103]
So it's not that you'll be able to equip necessarily an item at level one. These are all cosmetic skins. Again we are not about the pay-to-win or pay-to-convenience life. What we want to do instead is as you earn, craft, or find equipment in the MMORPG, these skins that you've earned in Apocalypse will be available at certain tiers, levels and/or access points. So for example, we have different grades of mounts right. We have the base one land mounts. We have the Royal mounts. We have the flying mounts if you're a mayor or King or Queen. We have legendary mounts. These classes of mounts will have available skins associated with those particular classes... If you have the Ramstider skin that you've earned from Apocalypse, you'll be able to apply that to your first land mount, which will probably be earned within the first five levels you'll earn a land mount. However if you have let's say for example the Gryphon, which will be a glideable mount. I'm sorry what's the name of the what's the name of the night one. The midnight- is the midnight bird or something like? The Nighthunter Gryphon. I think that's it. If you have that skin you'll only be able to apply that skin to a Royal mount so you'll still have to earn these things. Remember our position is that of: You need to earn these things in Ashes first. They're not purchasable or earned outside in Apocalypse and you're granted that immediately. These are skins that you apply to the things you earn in Ashes.[103] – Steven Sharif
These cosmetics reflect the lore of Ashes of Creation Apocalypse, which is set before the fall.[101]
- Armor appearances will reflect the ancient cultures of Verra.[101]
One thing that we announced to our alpha one backers that I know they love clarity on is that we'll also be including progression and experience tracking for participation and testing that will entitle them to some unique cosmetics as well that reflect on the lore of this setting, which is before the fall. Weapons and armor
Armes and Armure are tied to skills in Ashes of Creation Apocalypse.[107]
- Swapping between weapons will allow players to access the different skills on their hotbar.[107]
- Certain armor pieces have utility and defensive skills, such as like Camouflage, Polymorph and Battlefield wall.[107]
- Weapons are tied to one specific skill in early testing, but this may change.[108]
Weapons will have skills associated with them and they'll will rest on a hot bar and you can swap between the weapons on the hot bar and that'll allow you to access the different skills. Additionally the breastplate, the leggings: Those also have skills associated with them those are more utility and defensive abilities, such as like camouflage, polymorph, battlefield wall; that stuff. Those are on the armor pieces and then they are associated with right now the VC hotkeys for their abilities.[107] – Steven Sharif

Ashes of Creation Apocalypse armor comes with associated skills/abilities.[90] There are two types of armor: Upper and lower body.[127]

Armure grants damage mitigation.[90]
- In Ashes of Creation Apocalypse battle royale armor that has lost its damage mitigation can be recharged/repaired to restore damage mitigation points.[90]
- In Ashes of Creation Apocalypse castle sieges armor can be replenished by an Engineer. There may also be items in the world or objectives that replenish armor for the entire team, such as one of the buffs for taking a control point.[128]
- In Ashes of Creation (the MMORPG) armor does not function as a pool. There will be no armor bar as seen in Ashes of Creation Apocalypse.[128]
What you're seeing currently in the Battle Royale feature of Apocalypse is you find armor and that gives you an armor pool and then you can regenerate your armor. What we're going to be experiencing in the castle siege form is each class will have a set amount of armor that they join the match with that's already full and a set amount of health that's already full. Upon losing armor you can either have your armor replenished by an Engineer or there there may be ability for you to find items that are in the world or there could be objectives that replenish armor for the entire team, such as one of the buffs for taking a control point.[128] – Steven Sharif

Mana-forged armor
Mana-forged armor sets may be achievable in the Ashes of Creation MMO.[129]
- They also appear to be base variants of Ashes of Creation Apocalypse armor sets.[130]

Mana-forged sets are distinctly vibrant with luminescent magic, pulsating across the body of its hero. Ashes of Creation Apocalypse modular armor
Your base look for the character can be pretty boring, but what Steven gave us a challenge with from day one was to make sure even the base look, the t-shirt and pants, looked amazing... This is your zero character, if you will... Then you can go in and customize everything from the shoulder pads to the elbow pads, the belt that goes around them; do you want duel belts, you want to harness the clothes in the front. So every piece you see on here you can actually customize that at the front end. So what we do is we scale that up from zero, ten and twenty... We scale it up and we customize it; and then I want to really stress that each one of those looks as you progress is different. We're not just repurposing the same armor pieces. We're making unique sets that complement each other as you progress.[132] – Mat Broome

The Ashes of Creation user interface (UI) and HUD is built with customization in mind, rather than being one-size-fits-all.[140][138][141]
- Users will be able to quickly customize UI elements on-the-fly to suit the PvX nature of the game and different styles of combat.[140]
- Customization of UI elements, especially there on the HUD is a top desired aspect of our UI team.[140] – Steven Sharif

The Ashes of Creation Apocalypse camera is a tied third-person view, over the shoulder, for the purposes of reticle specific zoom options and aim-down-sights. This is solely intended for the current action combat.[150]
The idea behind our hybrid system is going to obviously be customizable from a traditional higher up third-person view that is seen in MMORPGs; and then to have that customizable so that more action-oriented players might be able to come in closer to the character and have more feasibility there.[150] – Steven Sharif

Players will be able to customize their keyboard control scheme in Ashes of Creation.[152]
