Il y a six religions principales ainsi qu'une religion de l'Underrealm.[2][3]

  • La religion est envisagée comme étant une source de motivation et non d'esthétique.[4]
  • Choisir une religion permet au joueur de suivre un chemin lumineux ou sombre.[5]

Nous parlons ici d'un panthéon, pas nécessairement de religions distinctes. Il y a toutes sortes de ramifications sur qui est le meilleur dieu, ou quel est le dieu qui vous correspond le mieux.[5]Jeffrey Bard

Story of creation

L'histoire de la Création nous parle d'une race d'êtres nommés Les Anciens, créés à l'image de ce que furent jadis Les Dix. Les Dix accordèrent toutes leurs qualités à une race devant avoir l'intendance de toute la Création. La puissance des Anciens grandit et un désaccord apparut au sein des Dix pour contenir leur nouvelle création. Trois parmi les Dix se séparèrent des autres et commencèrent à enseigner aux Anciens les Secrets de l'Essence. Lorsque les Sept apprirent cela, une formidable bataille céleste s'ensuivit. Des éternités passent et vous observez tandis que le combat continue dans le royaume céleste. Certains disent que c'est la bataille qui créa les étoiles et les cieux que nous voyons à présent. À chaque coup entre les Dix naquit une nouvelle étoile. Quand la bataille s'acheva, les autres et les Anciens furent bannis par les Sept dans le Néant. Les Sept trouvèrent l'erreur de leur approche et décidèrent de répartir leurs qualités dans quatre races au lieu d'une seule ; et c'est ainsi que les Humains, Elfes, Orcs et Nains vinrent à être. Vous observez tandis que les Sept créent Verra et placent chacune des races à leur emplacement respectif. Lorsque l'histoire prend fin, une sombre silhouette grandit au loin et se rapproche de vous. Jusqu'à ce que tout ce que vous voyez soit l'obscurité. Et vous vous réveillez en sueur après un cauchemar.[6]Steven Sharif

The Essence

The essence is a stream that exists across all planes of existence, but it exists at different levels of strength essentially at different levels that can be utilized; and the void is the furthest... There is a very minute amount of essence that can be found within the void. However the planes of existence that are in Ashes of Creation- they are connected across bridges created by the essence. So these ley-lines in a sense that exist within the different planes provide conduits of access and on Verra, which was a planet that was made after the ancient- the celestial battle.[7]Steven Sharif

The Essence is a metaphysical energy or life-force (Chi) that can be manipulated to create what could be viewed as magic. There are different planes of existence (realms) with varying degrees of strength (of magic), determined by their proximity to the Essence. The planes of existence in Ashes of Creation are connected across bridges created by the Essence.[8][7]

  • The Gods exist on the plane of the gods, which is the most connected to the Essence.[7]
  • The material plane is not the highest in terms of proximity to the Essence. Verra exists in the material plane.[7]
  • The Void is the plane that is the furthest from being connected to the Essence. Only a minute amount of essence can be found within the Void.[7]
  • There hasn't been a definitive understanding of how many planes of existence there are.[8]

Souls acting as conduits is a very integral component of some broader features in the storyline. If you think about souls being a conduit for Essence and you think of the gods as masters of the Essence: If you think of the Essence being separate from the Gods- let's say they're parallel to eachother- one didn't create the other, but they coexist in this almost symbiotic form with one another; almost to the point where their manipulation of the Essence is perfection: They can perfectly manipulate it and lesser beings; and I say 'lesser' in a sense of their alignment or closeness to Essence. They're still perfecting that manipulation and some never achieve perfection almost to the degree of ascendency or enlightenment- Essence being that sort of Chi that exists. In that regard, when a perfect being such as the gods- and I'm not saying 'perfect' as the correlation between sin and not sin, I'm thinking perfect in the sense of how you can control and manipulate the Essence: That control is perfection for them.[8]Steven Sharif

When you think about souls being a conduit, what are conduits used for? Conduits are passages; they're methods by which Essence can travel between realms, between planes. And there hasn't been any definitive understanding of just how many planes exist. We understand that there is a disparity between the planes when it comes to their connection to the Essence, and because Essence is so powerful; and it flows through these planes almost like a river. You can think that conduits help to maintain that flow and/or even exaggerate the flow; and there might be something at play, that I don't wanna touch necessarily, as to why one would want to create these types of conduits, these souls, this creation on the material plane: Something of significance.[8]Steven Sharif

Souls are the conduits for The Essence to travel between the different planes of existence. This idea is an integral component of the broader features in the storyline.[8]

  • The gods are masters of the Essence, but they are separate from it. One didn't create the other, but they exist together in a symbiotic form; where the gods have achieved an almost perfect manipulation of the Essence and of "lesser beings" who exist further from the Essence.[8]
  • The Essence is so powerful it flows through the planes almost like a river. Soul conduits help to maintain or even exaggerate this flow. Detail surrounding this has not yet been revealed but is said to have some significance in the story.[8]
  • King Atrax was the first ruler of Verra to discover the purpose of The Essence, allowing the manipulation of matter and exploitation of magic for any means.[9]
  • The Tulnar have souls and these souls act as conduits for the Essence.[10]

During the Apocalypse, The Ancients created monstrosities and perverted nature with corruption, which is the negative aspect of The Essence.[11]

  • Shape-shifting (changeling) is done so through the Essence by focusing on that specific type of magic.[12]
Any form of changeling or shape shifting that's capable is done so through the Essence. There’s a few ways that a soul can become attuned to a specific type of magic in manipulating the Essence; and overtime as you manipulate the Essence in the same way, your soul can start to develop a tendency to gravitate towards that type of magic. So in that sense- those shape shifters and/or changelings that are capable of changing their form- they do so because they have mastered to a degree that type of magic; and their souls have become attuned to that type of magic.[12]Steven Sharif
  • The Ancients themselves are more sedentary in their physical form and less capable of instantaneous shapeshifting. Their physical manifestations as Lieutenants, captains, generals, and raid bosses were honed over time due to their perversion of the Essence through corruption.[12]
They are literally bred into a role and that role has perfected over time because through the delineation of specific subsects of the soul of the conduit that this race has, those different castes become attuned to different roles. That's why they are traditionally in a caste society.[12]Steven Sharif

Pantheon of gods

Les dix déités dans Ashes of Creation forment un panthéon de dieux.[14] Il y a eu une lutte céleste entre les dieux, qui les a fracturés entre le bien et le mal.[5]

Le commencement de la création de l'univers présent dans Ashes of Creation est le résultat d'un groupe d'êtres divins. Ils étaient dix et il y a eu une lutte céleste qui a conduit à une fracture parmi ces dieux. Et il existe au sein de cette histoire deux composantes de bien et de mal.[5]Steven Sharif

Tôt dans la création de l'Univers, le panthéon des dieux a été divisé. Certains dieux influencent le côté corrompu des êtres qui existent dans l'Univers. Il est possible à travers des quêtes et une décision du joueur de rejoindre ou vénérer ces dieux.[15]

  • Les Anciens et les Autres sont les dieux maléfiques qui sont les principaux antagonistes dans l'histoire et qui ont souillé et perverti toute la création.[16]
  • Il est possible pour certains arcs narratifs de se rattacher à un parcours plus sombre/maléfique, si un personnage en fait le choix.[5]

Les dieux dans Ashes of Creation représentent différents aspects de l'Univers, ainsi que des sentiments.[17]

The Ancients

This is one of the lieutenants that exists of the Ancients; and you can see they have an almost alien look to them and that is because they have deviated over such a long period of time from their original creation, which looked something very very different: more akin to the Elven and Human races that we have now. But over time through their manipulation of the Essence and the corruption that has ensued within their race, they have taken the form that you can see.[24]Steven Sharif

You're going to see really kind of a dark, more insidious creature that's present as the primary antagonist within the storyline of Ashes of Creation. You know they don't have the typical physical attributes you come to expect from a bipedal species like eyes and a mouth, but more you know something alien- that exists something that is just not natural in its appearance.[27]Steven Sharif

The Ancients (the original creations of the Ten gods) and The Others (the banished gods) are the primary antagonists in the lore who defiled and perverted all of creation.[23][7][16]

  • The Ancients learned from The Others how to use The Essence to achieve immortality. This was a pure form of immortality, more akin to the godhood that exists among the Pantheon. This immortality prohibited them from encompassing undeath in the manner of King Atrax.[28]

If the Verran races were combined they’d be the ancients.[31]Steven Sharif

  • The Ancients arrived at Verra through the Harbingers, which are comet-like celestial bodies powered by a very strong source of magic that essentially acts as a bridge between The Void and the Material plane where Verra exists.[23][7]

You're going to see lieutenants, captains, generals, and raid bosses and they're all going to take different forms because their whole perversion of Essence through the corruption is to take creation on the material realm, that the Pantheon of good Gods did, and twist and bend it to the corruption that exists within the Essence, because they view that as a more powerful form, a more raw and arcane form of what magic is meant to be used for. There's no point in these false constructs of morality when utilizing and harnessing the power that comes from the Essence. That is a social construct that was created by inferior gods, according to the Others; and it limits the ability of their creation to really capitalize on what the Essence is to be used for in its pure, innate nature.[12]Steven Sharif

  • The Ancients' race exists in a cast-oriented system because the Essence has a profound effect biologically, physically, and visually on the appearance of the creatures that are manipulating it and are corrupted by it.[32][12]
    • Grunts are the peons or soldiers on the front lines who are specifically geared toward combat, or magic utilization, or specific environments or climates.[32][12]
    • Lieutenants have wing structures and more asymmetrical appearances.[32][12]
    • Captains and generals are also ranks in the caste system.[12]
    • Large raid bosses and/or world bosses are monolithic in their appearance and unlike what standard creatures look like. These are huge, imposing creatures.[32][12]

The gods... wanted to represent their qualities, their characteristics, their attributes within creation with the creation of something, so they started with a race that are now known as The Ancients; and they imbued them with all of their qualities. Essentially now that that turned out to be a mistake because with those types of qualities all in one species there was a a pride that happened- a desire to become more; and that led a little bit of conflict between the Ancients; and actually there was a partition created between some of the the gods within the pantheon that embraced the idea of introducing the Ancients as part of essentially their plane of existence and teaching them the ways of the Essence, in all of its facets: not just what can be used for good, but also what could be used for evil as well. And three of the gods kind of split off and went against the quorum that was established about not interfering with the Ancients after they started this down this road of learning more of the essence and how to manipulate it; and these three gods are known as The Others. So the others really kind of embraced teaching the Ancients knowledge of the essence that they had learned through their eternal existence; and this caused a celestial battle to occur; and the pantheon of the Seven were able to defeat the others; and they banished the Ancients and the Others from the material plane and from the plane of the gods to the void which is the furthest from being connected to the essence.[7]Steven Sharif

Temples

Les Temples sont un type de bâtiment dans Ashes of Creation qui se déverrouille à l'étape 3 (village) d'un noeud divin.[35]

Les Temples construits dans des noeuds font progresser une religion au sein de Verra. Il y aura une compétition entre les religions pour construire leur temple dans des noeuds sur des emplacements de temple vacants.[14]

Orders of the Seven

Les Ordres des Sept sont des organisations religieuses correspondant aux sept grands temples de Verra.[21]

  1. L'Ordre de l'espoir est un ordre des Humains Aelan basé dans la capitale d'Aela. Sa divinité tutélaire est Resna.[21]
  2. L'Ordre du destin est un ordre des Orcs Kaivek dont le siège se trouve dans la capitale de Ren. Sa divinité tutélaire est Norlan.[20]
  3. L'Ordre de la vérité est un ordre des Elfes Pyrian dont le siège se trouve dans la capitale d'Amera. Sa divinité tutélaire est Shol.[22]

Au sein des temples des sept, il existe différents niveaux d'organisations qui ne font appel qu'aux services des disciples les plus dévots. Selon les aptitudes du disciple, les services peuvent signifier de nombreuses choses. Pour ceux parmi les disciples qui détiennent un ensemble d'aptitudes particulier, il y a les ordres des sept. Chaque ordre obéit à une hiérarchie différente au sein des multiples temples des sept que l'on trouve sur l'ensemble de Verra.[21]Steven Sharif

The Lightpact

This flowing silken mantle of the Lightpact inspired hope in all those that caught a glimpse of them during the terrible final days of Verra. Fighting tirelessly against the pressing darkness, the fluttering capes were often the last rays of light seen before escaping to safety. Tragically, it was only the cloak itself that was recovered after the finishing blows were felled.[36]

The Lightpact was an alliance of the Orders of the Seven, created by the four major races of Verra in order to solve the mystery of the Harbingers.[37]

  • Even though these orders are from different temples and religions of the primary gods, their goal was to work together to subvert the aspirations of The Others and The Ancients and those who seek to pervert The Essence through the means of Corruption.[38]
  • There are key individuals within the Lightpact and within the religions that have a longer objective that ties into the overarching metanarrative, in terms of the reason for the return to Verra.[38]

Even though they have different focuses and reasons why their followers worship specific gods, at the end of the day, they're all a Pantheon of good. So there's a reason for them to work together to subvert the goals and/or aspirations of the Others and the Ancients. And those who seek to pervert what the Essence is capable of through the means of Corruption.[38]Steven Sharif

Standing against the heralds of corruption, the Lightpact once carried the hopes of all Verrans on their shoulders. Their flames would ultimately be dashed on the rocks of betrayal and destruction. Corruption, death, and evil now grasp and consume the light that once led the way. With the re-emergence of the Divine Gates, will the beacon of faith be set ablaze once more?[39]

Benefits

As a player advances their rank within their chosen religion they will gain access to the following benefits.[40]

Let's say you go to the temple and you sign up to be a follower of that religion. There is an inter-organization quest line that can advance and rank and title and only one person can be the leader for a period of time. If they advance all the way to the top. So like during sieges they'll have special benefits like they can you know grant divine prayer buff to allies within x amount of distance of them during the siege.[41]Steven Sharif

Certain titles will have special abilities. They'll be able to do special things during a siege or an event. So as a bishop you maybe have access when these events or sieges come online a secondary hot bar that provides you with those abilities. You may get additional hit points. You may have additional damage mitigation. You're sort of like a leader amongst your citizens in that regard; and that would be true for the mayor as well and other positions.[42]Steven Sharif

Augmentation

Strong religions provide unique augments that can be applied to a player's primary skills.[40][4]

  • Religious augments are considered top-tier achievements within a religion.[40]
  • These augments can be stacked on top of class augments. They will have a give-and-take system based on the choices a player makes.[40]

You're going to have advancement within the religion and within the church that you're a part of. And those advancements are going to be both reflective of the community's development of that religion out in the world: Building temples, building infrastructure for that, completing certain quests for it; and then you will benefit from the community's development of that specific religion via having certain augment abilities that you'll gain access to be able to apply on top of your secondary class augments to skills; and it's going to reflect what the nature of that religion is.[44]Steven Sharif

Progression

Il y a des voies de progression du joueur au sein d'une religion.[40][4]

  • Les joueurs ne peuvent pratiquer qu'une seule religion à la fois.[40][4]
  • La progression religieuse est basée sur des quêtes qui ne sont offertes qu'aux disciples de cette religion.[40]
  • Les religions ont un système de classement basé sur la performance du joueur dans ces quêtes et le nombre de quêtes terminées.[40][45]
  • Un changement de religion entraînera une perte de progression dans la précédente religion du joueur.[40][4]

Cela dépend de leur implication dans la religion elle-même ; leur performance dans certains objectifs religieux de la religion ; leur contribution au développement de cette religion dans le monde. Il y a de nombreux repères différents que nous utilisons à chaque étape pour déterminer comment ils progressent dans la religion. [46]Steven Sharif

Atheism

Les joueurs peuvent faire le choix de ne pas pratiquer de religion.[47][48]

Si vous voulez vous tenir à l'écart de la progression religieuse, vous pouvez... Je dirais que cela ne va pas vous pénaliser, car la plupart de ces améliorations sont plutôt « neutres ». Mais je pense que vous passerez alors à côté de beaucoup de choses que le jeu a à offrir.[49]Jeffrey Bard

Pour répondre à « devez-vous suivre une voie religieuse ». Cela n'est pas obligatoire. Le concept de cette voie est d'apporter une progression horizontale. Donc, ça ne devient pas une nécessité pour maintenir la parité avec la progression des autres personnes.[48]Steven Sharif

Shrines

Les joueurs pourront avoir la possibilité de construire des sanctuaires sur leur terrain privé, selon leur progression au sein de leur religion.[50]

  • Les Sanctuaires pourront donner accès à certaines contributions versées à votre divinité.
  • Ceux-ci pourraient être une étape pour déverrouiller une progression plus importante dans une religion.
  • Les Sanctuaires n'accorderont pas les même avantages que les Temples mais sont la meilleure alternative.
  • Les joueurs pourront payer pour utiliser les sanctuaires privés d'autres joueurs.

Removing player corruption

Le principal moyen de retirer la corruption est par la mort. De multiples morts peuvent être nécessaires pour ôter toute la corruption.

  • Mourir retire une part significative du score de corruption du joueur.[52]
  • Gagner de l'expérience réduira également lentement le score de corruption du joueur.[53]
    Cela crée une expérience plutôt amusante pour les chasseurs de primes qui tentent de vous capturer tandis que vous être en train de la perdre.[53]Steven Sharif
  • Une quête peut être utilisée pour réduire le compte de player kill (PK) d'un joueur corrompu, afin qu'il accumule moins de corruption dans le futur.[54][52]
    • Il s'agit d'un changement de design d'un quête religieuse utilisée pour réduire directement le score de corruption.[55]
  • La durée de la corruption est réduite dans les noeuds militaires.[56]

Affiliations

Un arbre d'affiliation, en cours de développement, détermine quelles entités peuvent participer aux attaques contre d'autres entités, au sein de cette hiérarchie.[57]

Il y a affiliation de guilde, une affiliation de partie, une affiliation de raid, une affiliation d'alliance, une affiliation de citoyenneté, une affiliation de société et il y a une affiliation de religion. Tous ces éléments ont une hiérarchie, et dans cette hiérarchie, il y a la possibilité de participer à certains systèmes. Donc par exemple, si vous avez un nœud qui est tombé entre les mains de votre état vassal et vous être citoyen du nœud parent, alors vous pourrez participer au siège contre le nœud vassal, mais si vous êtes citoyen du nœud vassal, vous ne pourrez pas participer en tant qu'attaquant contre le nœud parent; ainsi il y a une hiérarchie, sauf si vous renoncez à votre citoyenneté.[57]Steven Sharif
