Rime and Regal‎ pre-order pack cosmetics.[1]

We are very transparent in the business model of subscription with cosmetic only marketplace... I respect and understand the opinion of rather having a box price in-place of cosmetics, but that is not the direction I’ve decided to take. After weighing the benefits to the game and its population, I believe a lower barrier to entry is healthier in the long run, and the steady content release and quality of the product will sustain the retention for subscription and in-turn provide a healthier content release strategy for Ashes.[2]Steven Sharif

Cosmétiques provide a wide array of customization in Ashes of Creation.[3]

All skin cosmetic items are cosmetic items only and do not grant the user any other benefit. The lore text is flavor text, and background of the creatures and items in the world of Verra.[1]
  • Equitable cosmetics, both from a quantity and quality standpoint, are achievable through in-game means.[5][6] Cosmetics achievable in-game will be on-par, and in the case of legendary skins, even more elaborate than shop items.[7][8][2]
I want to make sure that equitable cosmetics both from a quantity and quality standpoint are achievable through in-game achievements. Time, effort should let you be happy with what you can accomplish.[6]Steven Sharif
In my opinion quality of cash shop cosmetics should be equal to in game achievable cosmetics, but offer a diverse selection of unique looks.[9]Steven Sharif
The most grand looking cosmetics will be from in-game achievment only.[10]Steven Sharif
From an armor standpoint, we cut armor sets up into many different pieces. These pieces can sometimes be used as part of other sets, that may include helmets, wrists, gloves etc. So while you will not see an achievable white version of the corvid castigator set in the game for example, you may see its shoulder piece used in another set, or its leggings, or wrist piece used in another set (not every piece as to form the whole set, but perhaps a couple pieces). This would be difficult to notice at first glance, due to the material, texture and color variation used, but this modular approach to content creation makes achieving a wide variety of looks achievable for an MMORPG of our size.[7]Steven Sharif
  • Different variants of store purchased cosmetic creatures (Pets and Montures) may exist in the wild.[12][13]
While the exact same skin will not be available again in the future once it's gone from the Shop, these skins are all variants of creatures that you can expect to see across Verra - so perhaps you will find one with a similar style in-game![12]Sarah Flanagan
  • Cosmétiques can be used by all races but there may be slight variations to make them work with the body builds of each race.[14][15]
  • There will not be mascot looking/furry cosmetics.[16]
It's important to remember, Ashes is a NO-BOX COST subscription only game, with an optional cosmetic marketplace. This achieves a few things from a monetization model. Having a lower barrier to entry for players to try the game when they don't have to fork out $60 for the box price is good, our box price is 0$. This also places an emphasis on the game's retention and our continual updates and content creation to keep players playing and staying subscribed (a put your money where your mouth is sort of philosophy for us as a company). It also means players don't have to spend $60 every time there is an expansion.[7]Steven Sharif
Is there an answer that satisfies everyone? Nope. And that's ok. We are open and transparent with our philosophies and business model. You know what you are getting with Ashes and to me, given my experiences in other games, it is a nice breath of fresh air.[7]Steven Sharif
I know there have been quite a few questions regarding cosmetics over the years. As we get further along in development, we'll be providing more specific information regarding what specific buildings, items, etc., you can place each cosmetic on. We'll update this for all past items.[19]Margaret Krohn

Artistic style

Obtaining cosmetics

Some cosmetics can be obtained in-game:[24]

Succès may unlock some cosmetics.[24]

Not all cosmetics are obtainable through in-game means. These will be purchasable through the cosmetic store.[24]

Cash shop cosmetics will be limited in quantity, limited in time for purchase. They will be unique, but you will also have extremely difficult to gain cosmetics in game as well as unique cosmetics that look great and better... There will be a lot of cosmetics that are achievable in the game because that is a very fun aspect of MMO play.[25]Steven Sharif

Magasin cosmétique

Ashes of Creation cosmetic store.[26]

There is going to be legendary cosmetics that can be earned and achieved in the game through the game systems, but that's going to take a significant amount of effort and work; and those cosmetics are going to be on-par with the cosmetics offered in the marketplace... What that does is it provides additional revenue to the company so that we can continue to fund the development of content as well and bridge the divide that not having a box cost would have and not having any pay-to-win mechanics whatsoever.[8]Steven Sharif

The Magasin cosmétique enables players to purchase Cosmétiques for use in Ashes of Creation.[24] The cosmetic store offers limited time, limited quantity items to help sustain game development.[6]

  • Equitable cosmetics, both from a quantity and quality standpoint, are achievable through in-game means.[6]
  • Nothing in the cosmetic store will be pay to win.[4]

Nothing in our shop will ever be pay to win as we believe this practice greatly hurts the MMORPG genre.[4]

  • Cash shop cosmetics will offer a diverse selection of unique looks.[9]

I want to incentivize purchase in the cosmetic shop for sustainability of what expansions we have intended, since we are not a box cost. I want to incentivize purchase by offering limited items: limited time, limited quantity, so you have confidence that when you purchase them, they won't be offered later on in some other way.[6]Steven Sharif

  • All cosmetic store items will be non-tradeable.[21] There will be no gifting mechanism for cosmetic items.[27]

I don't want cosmetic items that can be purchased from the market to be transferable... because it is in a way a transfer of money for potentially something in-game.[27]Steven Sharif

Packs de précommande

Packs de précommande were available from the Magasin cosmétique up until they ended on January 17, 2024 at 11:00 a.m. Pacific.[28][26]

We offer cosmetics for players who wish to support the project early. The exclusive nature of the limited availability is something I think collectors value. If you buy cosmetics as an MMO player, I know I enjoyed if the cosmetic is rare and not every girl at the party is wearing the same dress. In addition, these cosmetics are used to populate the world through NPC variants and color/texture changes so their offering aligns with our production schedule. The good thing about these packs is they contain no P2W advantages and there is no box cost, so from a mechanics standpoint you do not need to buy them to excel in the game on launch. And also, there are comparable and subjectively more grand cosmetics achievable in game as well.[11]Steven Sharif

Ashes of Creation Apocalypse cosmetics

Ashes of Creation Apocalypse cosmetic rewards

All of the skins attained in Ashes of Creation Apocalypse will be usable in the Ashes of Creation MMORPG.[29]

Progression and experience tracking for participation in Ashes of Creation Apocalypse testing entitled players to earn unique cosmetic rewards. These earned rewards will carry over in player's accounts to live launch of the MMORPG.[30][31]

One of the ways we want to give back to the Community in participating in this testing is allowing for progress, quests, achievements rewards to be gained in Apocalypse... You will have rewards and quests and achievements that you and your participation and your performance in that game, whether it be the Castle Siege, the Horde Mode or the Battle Royale will earn you cosmetics. There will be costumes. There will be mounts to earn. There will be housing and furniture. There will be emotes. There will be weapon variants. A lot of these are what we have in production for our project Ashes of Creation, we apply some variants and skins for and make them only available through participating in helping us test these different game modes. And they will carry over to your account on the MMORPG.[30]Steven Sharif

The account used for Apocalypse is the same account used for the MMORPG. Unique skins earned in Apocalypse will be added to the MMORPG as rewards for helping to prepare for the Alpha and Beta stages of Ashes of Creation.[35]

  • Cosmetic skins are only be able to be applied to things that have already been earned, crafted or found within the Ashes of Creation MMORPG.[36]
  • Skins earned in Apocalypse will be available to apply at certain tiers, levels and/or access points within the MMORPG.[36]

So it's not that you'll be able to equip necessarily an item at level one. These are all cosmetic skins. Again we are not about the pay-to-win or pay-to-convenience life. What we want to do instead is as you earn, craft, or find equipment in the MMORPG, these skins that you've earned in Apocalypse will be available at certain tiers, levels and/or access points. So for example, we have different grades of mounts right. We have the base one land mounts. We have the Royal mounts. We have the flying mounts if you're a mayor or King or Queen. We have legendary mounts. These classes of mounts will have available skins associated with those particular classes... If you have the Ramstider skin that you've earned from Apocalypse, you'll be able to apply that to your first land mount, which will probably be earned within the first five levels you'll earn a land mount. However if you have let's say for example the Gryphon, which will be a glideable mount. I'm sorry what's the name of the what's the name of the night one. The midnight- is the midnight bird or something like? The Nighthunter Gryphon. I think that's it. If you have that skin you'll only be able to apply that skin to a Royal mount so you'll still have to earn these things. Remember our position is that of: You need to earn these things in Ashes first. They're not purchasable or earned outside in Apocalypse and you're granted that immediately. These are skins that you apply to the things you earn in Ashes.[36]Steven Sharif

These cosmetics reflect the lore of Ashes of Creation Apocalypse, which is set before the fall.[31]

One thing that we announced to our alpha one backers that I know they love clarity on is that we'll also be including progression and experience tracking for participation and testing that will entitle them to some unique cosmetics as well that reflect on the lore of this setting, which is before the fall. So you'll be able to acquire some armors that reflect some of the ancient cultures of Verra that you will earn and hold for live launch.[31]Steven Sharif

It would be like your ancestors kept these curios for you.[31]Jeffrey Bard

Examples of some Kickstarter rewards will be included in Ashes of Creation Apocalypse.[37]

Ashes of Creation Apocalypse adventure paths

There are adventure paths (also known as Compendiums) in Ashes of Creation Apocalypse (Battle royale, Castle sieges, Horde mode).[34][35]

Ashes of Creation Apocalypse signup gift

A cosmetic sign-up gift will be implemented during Ashes of Creation Apocalypse.[42]

As we prepare for the Alpha One Phase 1 deployment, we will be implementing the cosmetic gift for all regions upon sign up, and to all currently registered accounts.[42]Steven Sharif

Cosmetic items

Cosmetic items allow players to customize their character in-game.[44]

  • Eye color.
  • Skin color.
  • Hair color.
  • Hairstyles.
  • Tattoos.
  • Scars.

Cosmetic items that produce in-game cosmetic effects will also be available.[45]

Dyes

Dye usage

Dyes are one-time use items that apply a cosmetic color change across all dyeable items that are equipped on a player's character (paper-doll).[49][50][51]

  • Two dye channels are provided per character that together influence up to 50% of the gear that is equipped by that character.[49]
    • The first dye channel is for lower grade dyes that influence 10 to 20% of armor appearance on that character.[49]
    • The second dye channel is for higher tier dyes that influence up to 30% of armor appearance on that character.[49]
  • The original design allowed individual items to be dyed with different dyes.[50]
One of the things that we want to do- again talking about player agency- is we want to give them the ability to change the appearance of their armor sets that they're wearing; and the way we've approached the dye solution is through a channeled system. We have a two channel dye system where the first channel is a lower grade dye that it has influence over between 10 to 20 percent of your overall armor appearance; and then the second channel dye is a higher tier dye that you have to acquire; and by doing so you can influence the remaining thirty percent- up to thirty percent of that armor appearance: So up to a total of fifty percent influence that can occur across all the pieces that you wear. Now one unique approach to the way we're doing this dye system is we're not allowing individual dyes to be applied on individual items, but instead we keep a cohesion across the set by applying that dye channel to your character; and when you equip a piece with your overall character it will assume that dye channel from your paper doll. So you apply the dyes to your character and when you equip a piece of item it will take that dye and it will influence the channel over that particular piece so that it comes into alignment. And what the reason that we're doing that is there's a lot of options with regards to customization for your character appearance, whether it be through transmog, through costumes, through mixing and matching sets and pieces that you can wear; and what we want to avoid is the rainbow effect where these pieces do not look good together and it creates the clown that's walking down the street.[49]

The Kickstarter dyes are sets of unique colors that are not obtainable by players who did not participate in Crowdfunding. These dyes are not usable as normal dyes are. Instead they are used to override the color of another dye obtained in game.[52]

  • They are assigned to a character from a user's account management page.[52]
  • They do not expire, so they may be used to continually override dye colors.[52]
  • Once a dye has been overridden it becomes a bound dye to that character, so the colors cannot be sold for in-game benefit.[52]
  • When an item is sold or transferred, color changes are reverted.[52]

Dyeable items

Dyes only affect tagged portions of dyeable armor or cosmetic items.[53]

  • The dyeability of costumes depends on the specific costume.[53]

Outside of wanting to keep maybe some identity from a lore perspective; for example if you have like a white lion's suit of armor, you may not want that white lion suit of armor to be black or blue. So, it's possible. It depends on the costume itself.[53]Steven Sharif

Seasonal cosmetics

There are seasonal cosmetics in Ashes of Creation.[24][55]

  • Seasonal cosmetics can be obtained in-game.[24]

Armor appearance

Gear attachments

Attachments are able to be unlocked as flair pieces to armor to create a customizable look.[68]

  • There will be hundreds of attachments available ranging from a small clasp to the front plate of a breast plate.[68]

Items on back and belt

Backer only armor skin

All Kickstarter backers receive a unique armor skin set.[76]

Modular armor

Kaelar base level Ashes of Creation Apocalypse robe set.

You can start to see like some of the components that we put together that we can mix and match and make new armors from. This is the base chassis for all of that.[77]Jeffrey Bard

Your base look for the character can be pretty boring, but what Steven gave us a challenge with from day one was to make sure even the base look, the t-shirt and pants, looked amazing... This is your zero character, if you will... Then you can go in and customize everything from the shoulder pads to the elbow pads, the belt that goes around them; do you want duel belts, you want to harness the clothes in the front. So every piece you see on here you can actually customize that at the front end. So what we do is we scale that up from zero, ten and twenty... We scale it up and we customize it; and then I want to really stress that each one of those looks as you progress is different. We're not just repurposing the same armor pieces. We're making unique sets that complement each other as you progress.[77]Mat Broome

Ashes of Creation Apocalypse will have three different armor themes: Plate, leather and robe.[78]

You can actually have three different types of themes: You have plate, you'll have leather and you'll have robe. So for every armor set that we're showing at each one of those tiers, you're actually gonna have nine unique looks to pick from.[78]Mat Broome

Character appearance

Emoji adds additional flare either for chat or character representation (social animations).[94][95][44]

Apparences

Racial skins

Racial skins enable a player to change their character's racial appearance.[97][98]

  • Racial skins transform the race of the character to that skin. The original racial appearance of the character is entirely replaced.[99]
  • Racial skins can be toggled on and off.[98]

You're changing your race over to that, which means that you won't look uniquely different if you were a Vek angel or a Human angel.[99]Steven Sharif

Racial skins are not costumes. This means that armor and character customization is possible on these.[100]

  • Skin color customization.[101]
  • Racial skins appear along with any costume appearances.[102]

There are plans to create other racial skins.[103]

  • Some potential future ideas include undead and werewolf (lycan) skins.[104]

Freehold building skins

Sunbeam's Remembrance medium homestead cosmetic freehold building skin.[105]

After you build your house, you can build other buildings on your Freehold. Each building needs the blueprint to start the process. If you have a cosmetic skin you want to use on a building, this is used after placing the blueprint. Once this has been placed, the building will be shown in a non-functional, construction state. Players will need to provide the required materials needed to complete the building construction, for each building on their Freehold.[106]

Freehold building skins were offered as Kickstarter and Summer crowdfunding rewards and were available in pre-order packs.[107][108][109][110][111]

  • Freehold building skins can also be achieved in-game.[112]
  • Freehold building cosmetics cannot be sold or traded with other players.[113][107]
Cosmetics that we have sold as part of different packs throughout the past- our pre-order system: Those cosmetics are split into three primary categories: housing, artisanship, and business; and we will have a breakdown that we're going to be releasing of the cosmetics that have come previously and which categories they exist in, but players will have the option to override the appearance of a blueprint that exists within one of those categories with an associated cosmetic skin; and that is obviously not just something that can be purchased through the pre-order system, but also can be achieved in-game as well- our cosmetics that can be applied to specific building types. And we don't get as granular where, let's say, you might have a shrine cosmetic, and you have, let's say, a blacksmith building that you wouldn't be able to apply the shrine to the blacksmith building. If the shrine exists in the artisanship lane you can apply it to any artisanship type building, but not to a house or business. so giving a little bit of additional context there.[112]Steven Sharif
  • A planned feature may allow multiple buildings to be replaced by a single large cosmetic skin.[119]
Cosmetics that are are very large in size- we will have a system that's not been developed yet, but we've been planning for this: we'll have a system where multiple buildings can be occupied space-wise by the larger cosmetic. So, a cosmetic might replace the visual appearance of one particular building, but then you'll be able to have that footprint occupy multiple buildings to replace the visual appearance. So that way you're still utilizing the similar amount of space.[112]Steven Sharif

Caravan skins

Caravan skins ("Pimp my caravan") were available in the cash shop (cosmetic store).[122]

You'll need your own creature and caravan hooked up to each other, and then the caravan cosmetic skin goes over all of them to make it look like what's pictured. you're not able to split out separately that caravan mount skin, hence why you'd want the separate mount skin if you wanted to ride it independently.[123]Sarah Flanagan

Ship skins

Ship skins apply to certain ship types.[125]

Mount skins

Pet skins

Cosmetic pets were available for purchase from the cosmetic store.[139]

  • Cosmetic pets can be summoned from level 1.[17]

Cosmetic pets, since non-functional from a gameplay perspective, can be summoned at lvl 1.[17]Steven Sharif

Guild hall skins

Costumes

Housing decorations were available for purchase from the cosmetic store.
