00:15 Steven Sharif:

I'm the only one doing the recording and I'm actually recording right now.
Welcome everybody, this is a kind of an impromptu look at our PAX East Alpha 0 playthrough that we're offering people who come up to our booth here at PAX East, just to kind of show them the state of the game. Show them, you know, what we've been working hard on.
I am joined in this current play session by Mr. Jeffrey Bard, lead designer on Ashes.

00:47 Jeffrey Bard:

Hello everybody how are you doing it's a pleasure to have you here.

00:50 Steven Sharif:

I also have with me Mr. Akil Hooper, lead technical designer on Ashes.

00:55 Akil Hooper:

Howdy howdy.

00:57 Steven Sharif:

And I have Mr. Christopher Atkins, our senior character artist on Ashes.

01:02 Christopher Atkins:

Hey I'm wicked happy to be here.

01:06 Steven Sharif:

Wicked... Oh, he's from Boston, yeah, he likes to drink coffee and play basketball. And then I also have Mr. Peter Pilone, our associate producer on Ashes.

01:20 Peter Pilone:

How's it going everybody.

01:22 Steven Sharif:

So I know we had a stream a little earlier today but coming from PAX East we don't have the absolute best internet connection. I think it's only a dedicated 20 megabit connection, but for some reason it was given a little bit of a buffering issue to you guys who were watching. So I promised that we would do a quick recording session for you to see on YouTube.
The quality of the game right now. We're gonna play through this...
Oh I should probably come back there cuz we got to get a quest, right. We're gonna play through this and Jeff, if you would like to, do you feel up to, giving us a little guide through. I mean we...

02:01 Jeffrey Bard:

I am up to anything.

02:03 Steven Sharif:

All right, where we going?

02:05 Jeffrey Bard:

Wait a second, I'm missing a skill so I'm trying to find it.

02:10 Steven Sharif:

Missing a skill... So by the way while he's trying to find that... Okay, nope, who just did that?

02:20 Peter Pilone:

I know that's, sorry, that's me because my walking is broken, so we should stop recording because I need to get out of that.

02:26 Steven Sharif:

Oh, you press F again to get out of that. We'll let Peter, we don't have to stop recording, that's okay, we do things live here.

02:37 Jeffrey Bard:

Yeah we like to do it live.

02:39 Steven Sharif:

We want you to see the the nitty gritty beneath the hood.

02:43 Akil Hooper:

We are edited, this is literally not live.

03:02 Steven Sharif:

So what you saw there, potentially, was we haven't implemented horses completely yet. We tried to for this build, but we had some replication errors and I think Peter jumped into a horse like literally jumped into it.

03:35 Jeffrey Bard:

Alright, we have actually two experiences baked into this thing. We're going to show you one of them. We call it the left hand side, because we go left outside of the city. But to start it we talk to archaeologist Arwen, he's going to give us a task to go find a reliquary and bring it back to the city, or the village I guess. So we're gonna right-click on him we're gonna go through some dialogue and we're going to get a quest.

04:00 Steven Sharif:

And you know Jeff, if you want to, just introduce the game I guess, because we may have some first-time viewers as well.

04:07 Jeffrey Bard:

So this is Ashes of Creation, it is an MMO, a massively multiplayer online RPG, and our claim to fame, the thing that really separates us from the rest of the pack is our ability to claim that we are a living dynamic world. This village is one small example of that living dynamic world.
It is a level 3 village, that means the players have been doing a lot of questing and experiencing here. They've unlocked a bunch of quests, they've unlocked some dungeons, and this quest is one of those things that they unlocked. We're gonna head on out of this...

04:40 Steven Sharif:

Wait, hang on, I have to get a quest.
I was entranced by your description I forgot to get the quest.
I see that you have a keen eye...
We should continue and expand up here.
I love this. Jeff, this is a beautiful story.

05:05 Jeffrey Bard:

Thank you I wrote it with Karen.

05:19 Steven Sharif:

I was just making the typical joke about the MMO players and stories.

05:23 Jeffrey Bard:

Oh yes, you were trying to hurt my feelings. I see. So we're gonna head on out of here.
You'll notice that there's a lot of guards around because it's level three village. There's a little bit of pushback from the NPCs who belong to that village who try to keep this area safe for people who want to travel these roads. The further away we get from this village the more dangerous it's going to become. And again because it's a level 3 village the encounters out here are a little bit more difficult than what you'd find in a normal level zero wilderness. Our first encounter is going to come up it's going to give us a little practice.
This is a very experienced party so we should be able to work our way through these. Now as we progress we're gonna find our first actual real encounter of that first one was just a little taste of...
The chance to get familiar with our controls. This will actually put this party to the test let's see. Thankfully we have two clerics.
See all sorts of skills being used here in Ashes of Creation there's some tab targeting skills there are some skill shot skills there's some template skills. Our goal is to have players be able to decide how they want to play. If they want a more action-oriented experience they can kind of spec into that.
And up here to the left we're going to see an abandoned caravan. We've got some of our party members running all over the place.

07:35 Steven Sharif:

Our lead designer, the absolute best navigator. I'm recording.

07:47 Jeffrey Bard:

This is evidence of our caravan system. The caravan system is the main way, one of the main drivers of our economy in Ashes of Creation. You have to actually put things at risk in order to gain from it.
But we're gonna hold up the party here for just one moment so we can show off some of our environmental interactions. We want the environment to be a character in and of itself we don't know which way to go our quest is not telling us hey there's a waypoint over here I need to go travel in this direction or that direction.
But the Ranger is really good at figuring out where to go. They have a keen eye and they can probably find some tracks that'll help us decide...

08:24 Steven Sharif:

How much am I getting paid to find the tracks though that's the question, what's the party distribution? Okay, all right, I'll take the percentage, very well.

08:33 Jeffrey Bard:

So he's gonna go ahead and use his utility skill which is bound to the R key. Ranger?

08:38 Steven Sharif:

I have found a set of tracks and they lead towards the caves. This way, colleagues.

9:15 SS:

I don't know if this cave looks like a good idea.

09:18 Jeffrey Bard:

Doesn't matter, it's a good idea, thats where the quest is taking us.

09:21 Steven Sharif:

Okay, alright guys, thank you for joining us on this video.

09:30 Jeffrey Bard:

So the quest invites us to keep going down into this cave. But there's a toxic fog that's dealing damage to us.
Thankfully, the cleric has a utility skill that can clear this up. Which we're going to do right now.
Now if you hadn't brought a cleric with you in this encounter if you take a damage during the whole thing making it a lot more difficult. You want people to a form parties based not just on ability to do DPS or tanks but kind of what else they bring to the party as well. Their utility skills, and other ways of interacting.
This party is taking a lot more damage than most party that I've run through.

11:07 Peter Pilone:

You guys should switch into some different weapons. Seeing a lot of two handers here. Where's the orbs at?

11:27 Akil Hooper:

Two clerics in the group and I still died.

11:32 Steven Sharif:

Oh, I'm not a cleric.

11:34 Peter Pilone:

I'm the DPS.

11:45 Steven Sharif:

This is hardcore, hardcore mode.

11:51 Peter Pilone:

Most parties had a much smoother run.

12:25 Jeffrey Bard:

All right we're heading down into a really dangerous looking area. Our boss is gonna come to beat us. This is the first boss encounter.
There is one more hiding away somewhere in the depth. The quests updated to keep this guy out so thats what we'll do.
This is the boss it's getting more difficult and starts doing more damage more damage he's taking. It's important for the whole party to kind of make sure they stay out of harm's way. Thankfully Sorrow's Hunger has pretty clear telegraphs that tells us what will happen.

13:07 Christopher Atkins:

We'll see if this party can win.

13:15 Steven Sharif:

Guys I put a trap here, if he comes this way, he's gonna get messed up.

13:21 Christopher Atkins:

Ranger doing ranger thing.

13:25 Steven Sharif:

I also set a tripwire up. But my trip wire only has a bell. Doesn't hurt, it just alerts your presence.

13:48 Peter Pilone:

Uhm, Sorrow's Hunger still here.

13:58 Christopher Atkins:

Now the Hunger is down to 5%.

14:03 Jeffrey Bard:

Is that your passive-aggressive way to tell us and pay attention, Peter?

14:10 Peter Pilone:

Nah, those are my comments on the bell on your gear.

14:13 Jeffrey Bard:

Alright, now that we've defeated Sorrow's Hunger we are allowed to enter the Dwarven fortress. This looks very dwarfy and fortressy to me.
So this is probably the direction we got to go. However, there's door here, this door does not open.
Maybe the mage can help us out. He's got a utility skill that will dispel magic and reveal hidden things: any kind of illusion, magically locked door they can unlock.

14:43 Christopher Atkins:

Everyone's getting punchy Jeff, we're all living on Halls and Red Bull.

14:49 Steven Sharif:

So fair disclosure: the catering company responsible for the food at the booth does not actually bring food to the booth. So everybody's here working on fume right now. I pushed ahead of the party. This is not good.

15:23 Akil Hooper:

Jeff only ate Sorrows. Get it? Sorrows hunger.

15:30 Peter Pilone:

Punny.

15:33 Christopher Atkins:

All right, we're moving and grooving.

15:36 Jeffrey Bard:

Ranger, let me heal you.

15:39 Steven Sharif:

Yeah, I pushed ahead a little bit, but I found some enemies so I scouted for us.

15:51 Peter Pilone:

Now no one fall off these platforms, they do not have railings.

15:57 Steven Sharif:

Chris just jumped off the platform. Why did you jump? We just told you not to jump off.

16:17 Peter Pilone:

What are we gonna do? This is live.

16:37 Christopher Atkins:

Let's see if I can fix this.

16:40 Steven Sharif:

But your tilda is locked out, how can you fix it? You literally can't fix it. Wait, you can port to player. He's gonna use some cheats, some GM cheats to get to us.

17:03 Peter Pilone:

All right, I think I got us in a single place, like nothing ever happened.

17:06 Christopher Atkins:

We're just gonna edit that up.

17:08 Steven Sharif:

Nope.

17:12 Peter Pilone:

Edit that out, keep the horse.

17:25 Jeffrey Bard:

Alright, well done everybody. We're making our way forward, slowly but surely. And it looks like we're coming up on our second boss.

17:59 Peter Pilone:

Thanks for the cover, tank.

18:29 Steven Sharif:

I got a trap down. Some glowing material coming out of his abdomen. Oh, we got some adds.

18:50 Jeffrey Bard:

Yeah these ads are gonna try to heal her, we gotta take care of them. All right, I think we got this.

19:40 Peter Pilone:

Heal that Ranger.

19:46 Christopher Atkins:

Only if the ranger drops the trap.

19:57 Jeffrey Bard:

And she is almost done with. And we took her out. Our quest updates.
Now lets find the relic, which is likely behind this door. I couldn't be sure, but maybe the mage can confirm for us.
So now that we've got that we can take a shortcut home by going through this little teleporter here. Sneak back to town and turn our quest in.
We catch him up on all of our adventures and he's gonna reward us by completing the quest and thanking us for playing at PAX.

21:16 Steven Sharif:

Hope you guys enjoyed this unedited version of a day in the life of a PAX goer for PAX East 2018 at Ashes of Creation.
